Kamla Didi
Kamla Devi, born on November 11th, 1927, was the eldest daughter of Pujya Dada Chellaram Ji.
Her upbringing was steeped in responsibility, as she oversaw her younger siblings and took care
of their morning routines in Delhi, bathing them before school. Her deep-rooted connection to
spirituality was evident as she excelled in Gurbani classes conducted by her father, who praised
her musical talent, often stating she sang even better than he did. Kamla Devi held a profound love
for satsangees, relatives, and a yearning for learning from saints. Her charitable nature extended
to giving away her possessions to those in need, inspiring others to actively engage in selfless service.
Even after a prestigious career as the senior Reception Officer in the Home Ministry, where her grace and
respect were so immense that even the Home Minister acknowledged her, she remained humble, engaging in
selfless acts like cleaning toilets at the Nij Thanw in Delhi during her retirement.
Her life was a blend of spiritual devotion and selfless service. Even her educational pursuits, like earning
a BA in Karachi, were met with a spiritual perspective when her father expressed that her time might have been
better spent on soulful pursuits. Her commitment to spiritual practices and devotion became more pronounced after
her father left for his Heavenly abode. She embarked on Kirtan Yatras, continuing the legacy, journeying across
India and other countries like Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, London, and Kuwait. Her resilience and dedication were
exemplified in moments like the night-long Kirtan in Kenya when she held the fort alone while her companions were
unwell. However, her later years were marred by the agony of cancer, which she bravely endured until her last breath
on December 31st, 1980. Following her departure, her mortal remains were ceremoniously united with Guru Granth Sahib,
a final tribute to her devout life.
